02:37 pm: Hey! I don't understand why people block others. It not like that is gonna solve any of ur problems and its kinda rude. it makes the blocky feel like crap. I suppose people do it cuz they feel powerful but really it just pisses me off. I assume there is always a good explanation but can u really hear that explantion ever since they blocked u and will probably forget about u and u will never talk to them again, online at least. GRRRR~ I'm good. I just figured I should update and this was what was on my mind. Well today I'm going to yoga and then my cello concert(wish me luck) and then downtown w/ Mark, perhaps, Idk yet. If u wanna come call my cell, or ani's. Anyhow...Ashley, what have u been doing this weekend, I haven't seen u at all cuz u've been w/ her church buddies, please invite me next time so I can form freindships w/ them and we can all hang out together. I mean Brooke seems really cool, I just haven't really gotten to know her. I'm kinda upset cuz Amanda was supposed to go to my concert and then sleep over but she is having one w/ somebody else so I was like, gosh darn it. But Ani's going to my concert so I'm happy. If u wanna come, call my cell too cuz I think it would be cool if people came to listen to me. And Shaun is out shopping, what is this? Crazyness~ Clara...is away, gosh, I miss her so much and its only been like 2 days but she will be back tomorrow. PARTY!

Bye,
Sasha

09:40 pm: This is a guy in california's opinion,Pavel K., I do not necessarily agree with it all but it good info anyhow.

In the early 1900s, the western states developed significant tensions regarding the influx of Mexican-Americans.Later in that decade, bad feelings developed between the small farmer and the large farms that used cheaper Mexican labor. Then, the depression came and increased tensions, as jobs and welfare resources became very scarce. Farmers had trouble finding labor and making money. One of the "differences" seized upon during this time was the fact that many Mexicans smoked marijuana and had brought the plant with them.

Now we travel a bit more forward in time The 1920's and 30's were known as the Jazz Age, as you might have learned. This time racism was part of the charge against marijuana, as newspapers in 1934 editorialized: "Marihuana influences Negroes to look at white people in the eye, step on white men's shadows and look at a white woman twice."
Basically, in their effort to discriminate against Blacks, they said that marijuana made them crazy, unable to be stopped, and also made them rape white women. Other fear-tactic rumors started to spread: one, that Mexicans, Blacks and other foreigners were snaring white children with marijuana.

During this time, the United States was also dealing with alcohol prohibition, which lasted from 1919 to 1933. The topic of alcohol was very visible to the public, and was widely debated. Basically, everyone knew about it, whereas drug laws were being passed pretty much without the public's knowledge.

National alcohol prohibition happened through the mechanism of an amendment to the constitution, the 18th amendment. Earlier (1914), the Harrison Act was passed, which provided federal tax penalties for opiates and cocaine. As you may know, cocaine and opiates were sold in stores during that time, and were not considered "scourges" and "horrible drugs" as they are now.

The federal approach is important. It was considered at the time that the federal government did not have the constitutional power to outlaw alcohol or drugs. Because of this, the prohibition of alcohol required a new constitutional amendment.

Since drugs could not be outlawed at the federal level, the decision was made to use federal taxes as a way around the restriction. In the Harrison Act, legal uses of opiates and cocaine were taxed (supposedly as a revenue need by the federal government, which is the only way it would hold up in the courts), and those who didn't follow the law found themselves in trouble with the treasury department for not paying taxes on the sale of these drugs.

n 1930, a new division in the Treasury Department was established -- the Federal Bureau of Narcotics -- and Harry J. Anslinger was named director. Anslinger saw that this new beaureau could be extremely profitable. Why? Because it can simultaneously define both the problem, and the solution, and also generate money in the process. He immediately realized that opiates and cocaine wouldn't be enough to help build his agency, so he attacked marijuana and started towards making it illegal on a federal level. Because racial tension and violence were very widespread during that time, Anslinger immediately drew upon the themes of racism and violence to draw national attention to the problem he wanted to create. He used the public's already existing dislike, nay, even hatred of blacks and Mexicans to further his cause."There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.""Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."

There is more, more later.

05:24 pm: Pot

MARIJUANA - A often used "street drug" that is derived from the marijuana plant (active ingredient tetra-hydro-cannabinol). Used to heighten perception, cause mood swings, and relax the mind and body. Signs of use include: red eyes, lethargy, and uncoordinated body movements. Long term effects include a decrease in motivation, but may also have harmful effects on the brain, heart, lung, and reproductive system.

There are many long-term effects of chronic marijuana use, such as memory problems, impaired driving, immunosupression, decreased testosterone, lower sperm counts, increased heart rate and problems with attention. Some feel it creates a "amotivational syndrome", that is, decreased interest in energy and achieving. But by far the most dangerous side effect of regular pot use is its effect on the lungs. It contains 5 to 15 times the amount of benzpyrene, a known carcinogen, than tobacco smoke. It is associated with increased rates of bronchitis, upper respiratory infections as well as cancer of the mouth. Regular smokers of pot also develop the same type of damage to the cells lining the airways and lungs that occurs with cigarette smoke. This damage can lead to obstructive pulmonary diseases. Finally, don't count on finding a "medicine" that will cover up your pot use. Not only doesn't it work very well but the labs are testing for these kinds of adulterants now. So you'd get bagged anyway. I hope that's enough education to steer you in the right direction. Good luck.

Marijuana is not known for increasing blood pressure but it definitely speeds up your heart rate. Perhaps the marijuana you're smoking is laced with a stimulant of some kind. Anyhow, if you have high blood pressure at 18 years of age, I wouldn't spend any time wondering about whether it's related to smoking pot

Marijuana is illegal. Using, holding, buying, or selling marijuana can get you suspended or expelled from school. This will hurt your chances of getting a job in the future.
Resist peer pressure. Marijuana may make you feel part of the crowd for a while -- but who needs friends who could self destruct at any moment?
Keep on the right track. Marijuana reduces your ability to do things that require coordination and concentration, like sports, dancing, acting, and studying.
Think twice about what you are advertising. Do you want to promote something that can cause cancer? make you forget things? or make it difficult to drive a car? Think about what you're doing if you wear T-shirts, hats, pins, or jewelry with a pot leaf/joint/blunt on them.
Do the right thing. Using marijuana hurts your education, family ties, and social life.
It's a risky business. Marijuana interferes with your thinking and judgment. Sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, violence and car crashes are all possibilities when you use marijuana.
Get with the program. Contrary to what you might hear in songs or see on TV or in the movies, smoking marijuana does not make you cool.
You can get hooked. Many users report that, over time, they require more of the drug to get the same effect.
Talk about your problems. Using marijuana won't help you escape your problems, it will only create more. Don't believe people who say that marijuana is no big deal, or that it will make your life better.
You don't need it. If you think "everybody's doing it" you're wrong -- over 86 percent of 12-17 year olds have never even tried marijuana. Marijuana won't make you happy or popular or help you learn the skills you need as you grow up. You can do that with the help of friends, family, and other adults you trust.

Effects on the Brain

Scientists have learned a great deal about how THC acts in the brain to produce its many effects. When someone smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to organs throughout the body, including the brain.

In the brain, THC connects to specific sites called cannabinoid receptors on nerve cells and influences the activity of those cells. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. Many cannabinoid receptors are found in the parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement(5).

The short-term effects of marijuana can include problems with memory and learning; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem solving; loss of coordination; and increased heart rate. Research findings for long-term marijuana use indicate some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term use of other major drugs of abuse. For example, cannabinoid (THC or synthetic forms of THC) withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system(6) and changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine(7). Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse.

Effects on the Heart

One study has indicated that a user’s risk of heart attack more than quadruples in the first hour after smoking marijuana(8). The researchers suggest that such an effect might occur from marijuana’s effects on blood pressure and heart rate and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

Effects on the Lungs

A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers(9). Many of the extra sick days among the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses.

Even infrequent use can cause burning and stinging of the mouth and throat, often accompanied by a heavy cough. Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers do, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency to obstructed airways(10). Smoking marijuana increases the likelihood of developing cancer of the head or neck, and the more marijuana smoked the greater the increase(11). A study comparing 173 cancer patients and 176 healthy individuals produced strong evidence that marijuana smoking doubled or tripled the risk of these cancers.

Marijuana use also has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract because it contains irritants and carcinogens(12, 13). In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke(14). It also produces high levels of an enzyme that converts certain hydrocarbons into their carcinogenic form—levels that may accelerate the changes that ultimately produce malignant cells(15). Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which increases the lungs’ exposure to carcinogenic smoke. These facts suggest that, puff for puff, smoking marijuana may increase the risk of cancer more than smoking tobacco.

Other Health Effects

Some of marijuana’s adverse health effects may occur because THC impairs the immune system’s ability to fight off infectious diseases and cancer. In laboratory experiments that exposed animal and human cells to THC or other marijuana ingredients, the normal disease-preventing reactions of many of the key types of immune cells were inhibited(16). In other studies, mice exposed to THC or related substances were more likely than unexposed mice to develop bacterial infections and tumors(17, 18).

Effects of Heavy Marijuana Use on Learning and Social Behavior

Depression(19), anxiety(20), and personality disturbances(21) have been associated with marijuana use. Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person’s existing problems worse. Because marijuana compromises the ability to learn and remember information, the more a person uses marijuana the more he or she is likely to fall behind in accumulating intellectual, job, or social skills. Moreover, research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on memory and learning can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off(22, 23).

Students who smoke marijuana get lower grades and are less likely to graduate from high school, compared with their non-smoking peers(24, 25, 26, 27). A study of 129 college students found that, for heavy users of marijuana (those who smoked the drug at least 27 of the preceding 30 days), critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning were significantly impaired even after they had not used the drug for at least 24 hours(28). The heavy marijuana users in the study had more trouble sustaining and shifting their attention and in registering, organizing, and using information than did the study participants who had used marijuana no more than 3 of the previous 30 days. As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a reduced intellectual level all of the time.

More recently, the same researchers showed that the ability of a group of long-term heavy marijuana users to recall words from a list remained impaired for a week after quitting, but returned to normal within 4 weeks(29). Thus, it is possible that some cognitive abilities may be restored in individuals who quit smoking marijuana, even after long-term heavy use.

Workers who smoke marijuana are more likely than their coworkers to have problems on the job. Several studies associate workers’ marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, and job turnover. A study of municipal workers found that those who used marijuana on or off the job reported more “withdrawal behaviors”—such as leaving work without permission, daydreaming, spending work time on personal matters, and shirking tasks—that adversely affect productivity and morale(30). In another study, marijuana users reported that use of the drug impaired several important measures of life achievement including cognitive abilities, career status, social life, and physical and mental health(31).

Long-term marijuana use can lead to addiction for some people; that is, they use the drug compulsively even though it interferes with family, school, work, and recreational activities. Drug craving and withdrawal symptoms can make it hard for long-term marijuana smokers to stop using the drug. People trying to quit report irritability, sleeplessness, and anxiety(38). They also display increased aggression on psychological tests, peaking approximately one week after the last use of the drug(39).

06:47 pm: Hey Everybody. I am in St. Louis and I can't get on again after today. I am at a public library so I could use the internet.

Yesterday we got here and we went to an art museum and we interpreted the paintings. We went on a walk around this cute little pond w/ fountains. Today we went to a scupture garden which was awesome, and we took tons of funny pics. We also went to a science museum and did lots of hand on activities. Tomorrow we are going to the zoo and i-max theaters. Thats all so far.

We are coming back Wednesday, yippy. Miss you all,

Sasha
